Folic acid is also known as folate or folacin. Folic Acid is necessary for energy production and red blood cell formation.

Folic Acid also strengthens the immune system by aiding in proper formation and functioning of white blood cells.

Folic acid helps protect against heart disease, birth defects, osteoporosis, and certain cancers. Folic acid works with with choline, vitamin B12 and B6. Folic Acid plays a role in cell division. A deficiency in folic acid may be a factor is dysplasia, abnormal cell growth which can be considered precancerous. Cervical dysplasia may be stopped or reversed. Women taking oral contraceptives may have a concentrated folic acid deficiency which could be a factor in their increased susceptibility to cancer causing viruses or chemicals.
